The CYF
The Chinese Youth Fellowship, the latest addition to our fellowship programs, launched its inaugural cohort in April 2023 with four highly driven participants. The fellows successfully completed the program in September 2023. This initiative was championed by former Councillor Cynthia Lai, who played a pivotal role in its establishment and ongoing success. On December 15-17, 2021, Lai introduced a motion to integrate the Chinese Youth Fellowship into the enhanced Diversity Youth Fellowship program for the 2022-2024 period.
The fellowship is an intensive six-month program that combines leadership training, policy development workshops, and direct experience in public service. Participants engage in four months of skills-building sessions, covering topics like civic engagement, community organizing, and policy advocacy. This is followed by a two-month placement in the office of a City Councilor, where fellows gain firsthand experience in legislative processes and community outreach.
Mentorship from Community Leaders:
Fellows are paired with mentors from various sectors, including public administration, law, and social advocacy, providing guidance and support throughout the program.
Networking Opportunities:
Regular networking events allow participants to connect with public officials, community leaders, and other professionals, expanding their career horizons.
Capstone Project:
Each fellow completes a capstone project focused on addressing a key issue affecting the Chinese community in Toronto, presenting their findings to a panel of stakeholders at the end of the program.
